A discount sounds simple. Something costs $80. The store says 15% off. Okay. But now you still have to figure out: how much am I actually saving? What am I actually paying? And sometimes the question works backward. Maybe the tag says originally $80, now $68, and you are standing there thinking, "Okay, but what percentage did they actually take off?" That is why this calculator should work in more than one direction. You tell it the numbers you already know. It finds the number you do not.
Start with the original price. Let's use $80. Now say the discount is 15%. Convert 15% to a decimal: 0.15. Multiply: $80 × 0.15 = $12. That means you save $12. Then subtract: $80 - $12 = $68. Your sale price is $68. That is all a percentage discount is doing.
Twenty percent of $80 is $16. So $80 - $16 = $64. You pay $64.
Twenty-five percent of $80 is $20. Sale price: $60.
Half of $80 is $40. So a 50% discount leaves you paying $40. That one is easy. The calculator becomes more useful when the percentages are not so neat.
You should be able to enter that too. Suppose something costs $75. Your coupon says $10 off. Sale price: $75 - $10 = $65. But maybe you also want to know, "What percentage discount is $10 off $75?" Divide: $10 ÷ $75 = 0.1333. Multiply by 100: 13.33%. So $10 off $75 is approximately 13.33% off. The calculator shows both the dollar savings and effective percentage automatically.
Suppose the original price was $80. Now it costs $68. First find how much the price dropped: $80 - $68 = $12. Now divide the savings by the original price: $12 ÷ $80 = 0.15. Multiply by 100: 15%. That means the item is really 15% off. This is especially useful when a store shows an original price and a sale price but does not show the percentage.
Sometimes you know the sale price and the discount percentage. For example, the sale price is $68 and the item is 15% off. If 15% was removed, then 85% of the original price remains. So $68 ÷ 0.85 = $80. The original price was $80. That is why the "What Do You Want to Find?" dropdown matters. You do not always start with the same information.
Stores use both. Maybe one coupon says 20% off. Another says $15 off. Which is better? It depends on the price. For an $80 item, 20% off saves $16. The $15 coupon saves $15. So the 20% coupon wins by $1. But on a $50 item, 20% saves $10. Now the $15 coupon is clearly better. The bigger percentage is not always the better deal. You have to calculate what it means in actual dollars.
Suppose you are comparing $15 off with 20% off. When are they exactly equal? Divide: $15 ÷ 0.20 = $75. So at $75, both save $15. If the item costs more than $75, 20% off saves more. If the item costs less than $75, $15 off saves more. That is useful when you are standing in a store comparing coupons.
No. This is one of the biggest discount mistakes. Start with $100. Take 20% off. You now have $80. Then take 10% off the new $80 price. That saves $8. Final price: $72. Total savings: $28. Effective discount: 28%. So 20% off plus another 10% off equals 28% off overall, not 30%. The second discount is being applied to the smaller price.
Start at $100. 50% off: $50. Then another 20% off $50 = $10. Final price: $40. Total savings: $60. Effective discount: 60%. It is not 70%. Again, stacked percentages do not simply add together.
A fixed discount is exactly what it sounds like. Example: $20 off. If something costs $95, then $95 - $20 = $75. No percentage is needed. But the calculator can still tell you the effective percentage. $20 ÷ $95 × 100 = approximately 21.05%. That gives you another way to compare deals.
It depends entirely on the original price. 30% off $20 saves $6. 30% off $100 saves $30. 30% off $1,000 saves $300. This sounds obvious, but it is why shopping only by the percentage printed on the sign can be misleading. The dollar amount matters.
Imagine Store A sells an item for $100 with 40% off. Sale price: $60. Store B simply sells the same item for $55. No flashy discount sign. The second store is still cheaper. The goal is not "Which store shows me the biggest percentage?" The goal is: what do I actually have to pay?
If a retailer says an item was $150 and now it is $89, the calculator can tell you the mathematical discount. But mathematics cannot tell you whether $150 was a meaningful recent selling price. That is a different question. When the purchase matters, compare recent prices, other retailers, price history where available, and the actual final amount you will pay. The Federal Trade Commission has guidance addressing deceptive price comparisons and sale-price advertising. The calculator should help you verify the math. It cannot verify a retailer's entire pricing history.
Savings is what was removed. Sale price is what remains. Example: original $100, discount 25%, savings $25, sale price $75. They are not the same number. And together they equal the original price: $25 savings plus $75 sale price equals $100 original price.
"Clearance" describes why a retailer may be reducing merchandise, such as moving older inventory. Mathematically, you can still compare original price and current price. If something was $120 and is now $72, you saved $48. $48 ÷ $120 = 40%. So the effective markdown is 40%.
Coupon codes can use percentage discounts, fixed-dollar discounts, free shipping, minimum-purchase requirements, category restrictions, or other conditions. For example, $20 off $100 does not necessarily mean you should buy more just to reach $100. Ask: what was I already planning to spend? What is the actual final price? Would I still buy this without the coupon? That last question matters. A $40 discount on something you did not need can still mean you spent money.
Mathematically, $20 off $100 equals 20%. But only if the qualifying purchase is exactly $100. If you spend $150, the same $20 discount represents 13.33%. If you spend $200, it represents 10%. The effective percentage decreases as the purchase amount rises. That is another reason dollar discounts and percentage discounts should both be supported.
If two equal-priced items are required and the second is completely free, buy one get one free effectively means 50% off the average price of the two-item purchase. Example: two $40 items. Normally $80. BOGO free: $40 total. Savings: $40. Effective discount: 50%. But that only helps if you actually wanted two.
This is not 50% off both items. Two equal $40 items: first $40, second $20. Total: $60. Normal total: $80. Savings: $20. $20 ÷ $80 = 25% effective discount. So a "buy one, get one 50% off" promotion on two equal-price items is effectively 25% off the combined purchase. That surprises a lot of people.

Before buying something, try three things. First, calculate the real dollar savings. Second, compare the sale price with other available prices. Third, ask whether the purchase still makes sense at the final amount. That changes the question from "How much am I saving?" to "How much am I actually spending?" And that is usually the more useful number.

Is $20 off better than 20% off?
It depends on the original price. At $100 they are equal. Below $100, $20 off saves more. Above $100, 20% off saves more.
Is $15 off better than 20% off?
They are equal on a $75 purchase. Below $75, $15 off saves more. Above $75, 20% off saves more.
Is 20% off plus 10% off equal to 30%?
No. The second discount is applied after the first. On $100, 20% off brings the price to $80, then another 10% brings it to $72. The effective discount is 28%.
Is 50% off plus 20% off equal to 70%?
No. On $100, 50% off gives $50, and another 20% off reduces that to $40. The total effective discount is 60%.
What is a fixed-dollar discount?
It subtracts a specific dollar amount instead of a percentage. A $20 discount from a $95 price gives a $75 sale price.
How do I convert a dollar discount into a percentage?
Divide the dollar savings by the original price and multiply by 100.
What does "save $25" equal as a percentage?
It depends on the original price. Saving $25 from $100 is 25%, while saving $25 from $200 is 12.5%.
Is buy one get one free really 50% off?
If the two required items have the same price, buying one and receiving the second free creates a 50% effective discount across the two-item purchase.
What is buy one get one 50% off really worth?

Clearance describes the retailer's pricing or inventory situation. You can still calculate the effective percentage by comparing the original and current prices.
How can I tell if a sale is actually a good deal?
Calculate the final price and compare it with recent prices from the same or other sellers. A large advertised percentage does not automatically make the final price the lowest available price.
Why should I care about dollar savings instead of just the percentage?
Because the percentage does not tell you how much money actually stays in your pocket. A 50% discount on a $10 product saves $5, while 10% off a $500 product saves $50.
Should I buy something just because it is on sale?
A sale changes the price, not whether the purchase fits your needs or budget.
